Bush hogging in Brunswick County

Bush hogging is the maintenance cut: a heavy rotary cutter that knocks an overgrown field, easement, or lot back down to something you can mow, walk, and see across. It's the cheapest pass in the land-clearing toolbox, and the whole trick is using it before the growth gets too big for it.

What a bush hog handles, and what it doesn't

Broomstraw, briars, goldenrod, saplings up to about wrist thickness: that's bush hog territory, and it goes fast. Once wax myrtle and volunteer pine get past that size, a rotary cutter just beats itself up and leaves splintered stubs. At that point the honest recommendation is a mulching head, which costs more per acre and is worth it. We run both, so you get the right machine instead of the one somebody happened to own.

The regrowth math

In this climate a field hogged once or twice a year stays a field. Let it go two or three summers and you've grown a mulching job at several times the price. If you're holding land off NC 211 or out toward Ash waiting to build or sell, an annual pass is the cheapest way to keep your options (and your sightlines) open.

Pricing and ground conditions

Most jobs run a few hundred dollars per acre with a half-day minimum, and the per-acre rate drops as acreage climbs. The honest caveat in Brunswick County is water: after a wet stretch, low fields hold it for weeks. Tracked machines buy extra working days, but when ground is truly saturated we'd rather push the schedule than cut ruts into your field, and we'll tell you the real window up front.

Questions we get every week

What does bush hogging cost?

Most open, overgrown fields here run a few hundred dollars per acre with a half-day minimum, cheaper per acre as the parcel gets bigger. Once growth gets thicker than your wrist, bush hogging stops being the right tool and mulching takes over.

How often should a field get hogged?

Once or twice a year holds a field in this climate. Skip two summers and you've grown a mulching job instead, at several times the price.

Can you hog wet ground?

Tracked machines buy us more days than a farm tractor gets, but standing water is standing water. In wet stretches we schedule around it and tell you the honest window instead of rutting your field.
